Vocabulary Activities

  1. Word mappingHave students select twenty vocabulary words from the bookthe twenty words they feel it is most important for a reader to know in order to understand the story. They should "map" each word using the following framework:

Target Word Map

  1. Word CardsPresent students with these target words (or others you choose from the book):
bruin 8 hibernate 9 environmentalist 43 forage 47
canines 66 snares 68 wardens 88 habitat 142
boycott 155 sanctuary 170

Have students make up individual vocabulary cards that connect the target word and its definition with something or someone from the student's personal experience, reading, or observation—as well as with its context in the novel.

For example, if "sluggish" (93) happens to describe the creek behind the student's house, the student's card might look like this:

Sluggish Vocab Card
