Grade 9, MN

It appears the way that life works,
Nothing is ever as it seems.
Never does anything go as you want.
The only things perfect are dreams.

You finally start to work things out,
Mold them to fit you.
Then suddenly your world comes crashing down, And once again everything is blue.

And life seems like an endless race,
That can't be lost or won.
Every moment is scrutinized,
By you, and everyone.

No one is ever watching you,
Until the time you make a mistake.
So we all pretend that we are perfect.
We all have an identity that is fake.

It's like we hear ourselves say,
"People don't notice what is not there.
As long as you look like a perfect person,
Those who judge won't care."

So we heed this words and to us,
They are like a feast served on a golden platter.
We conform our lives to what others want.
It's like our own decisions don't matter.

So everyday we play pretend.
We act like a person we're not.
Although we shouldn't care about what others think,
Sometimes it feels like that's all that we've got.

And each day we appear to lose a part of us; Something we wish to not show.
And we hope that the more fake that we get,
Nobody will ever know.
