Splash!!!!! The most common sound at at the pool. Along with crowds cheering swimmers swimming and starting guns going off it's a pretty noisy place. Most swim meats sound this way but this meet is special. It's the Olympics the biggest sports event. It only happens every four years and when it does it is a big deal. There is a limited number of people that can come and it is very hard to make it since it is open to the whole world. One day a girl named Jackie Jones was at her pool swimming when the coach of the swim team came up to her and asked her if she would like to be on the swim team. She immediately wanted to join but her mother said no because they didn't have the money. Jackie was very sad and didn't understand because she was only seven years old. Mrs. Jones was a single mother with one child. She loved her daughter very much but she just didn't have the money to pay for all the swim suits, caps and goggles that Jackie would need to be on the swim team. Jackie wanted to do this more than anything and so she told her mom that she would give up dance and do this instead. Mrs. Jones agreed and Jackie started going t practice. The coach realized that she had great talent and offered to help pay the fee for the swim team. He could do this because he was the owner of the club. He also offered to give her extra lessons on his own time. Jackie got better and better and she won all the races and awards she could win. She loved swimming and her mom loved watching her swim. Jackie won every race until she was ten years old. Then she met her competition. It was her best friend. She had been telling her friend Kelly about the swim team she was on. Kelly thought it sounded like fun so she joined the team. Kelly also had a very good talent for swimming. Jackie didn't win all the races any more and she stopped talking to Kelly. She felt some one had taken something very special from her. She thought this was the only thing that she was good at and suddenly someone had taken it from her. She became unhappy and didn't want to swim any more. Her mother told her that losing was part of becoming great. The next few summers got a lot better because Jackie grew older. She started to realize that losing really did make you better. She loved to swim so she didn't let losing stop her. Jackie trained almost every night so she could get better. Kelly was still good but didn't train as hard so she wasn't as good. Jackie got better and better until she made the Olympics. She made the Olympics in three events. Mrs. Jones was very supportive of Jackie and got a personal trainer to help Jackie. Mrs. Jones had aslo been a swimmer when she was younger. She never told Jackie this but she had made it to the Olympics also. It had been a long time since Mrs. Jones was in the Olympics and she longed to have Jackie win. Mrs. Jones hadn't been able to compete because she had a fatal accident. She might have even wanted Jackie to win more than Jackie her self did. The days of the Olympics came and went very quick. Jackie won all three of her events. She was happy but more sad at the same time. While she was getting her awards her mother had a stroke and passed away. Mrs. Jones had seen the awards on the television right before she died. Mrs. Jones had told one of the nurses to tell Jackie the story of her Olympics and that Jackie had made her very proud. Jackie went on to compete and win many more gold metals in the Olympics. The story of her mom kept her going when she lost a race.
