"How
do teachers cultivate a loving relationship [between students and
the environment]? Not by shutting our eyes to what is wounded in
the environment, but by nurturing each child's innate
connectedness with nature through more age-appropriate activities.
Timing is everything.

For
children ages 3-7, developing empathy for creatures and their
habitats is key. Focusing on nearby nature—the birds and animals
children see every day—is far more effective than calling their
attention to the plight of an endangered species far away. For
children ages 7-11, exploration is the best approach..."
